Dear Dr. Freelance: I’m the Communications Director for WaterIsLife, a charitable organization that delivers personal water-filter straws to Haiti, Kenya, Ghana and 27 other countries where a lack of clean water can be life threatening. We’re hoping to develop relationships with creative freelancers such as writers, editors and videographers who share a desire to make a difference in the world by contributing a small amount of their time and creative talents…do you mind sharing our message with your audience? They can contact me at kristine (at) waterislife (dot) com. Thanks, Doc!—Kristine
Dear Kristine: I am a big believer that charitable work should be a part of creative freelancers’ business plans. Nonprofit organizations benefit from freelancer talents as a low-cost, high-quality solution, while freelancers benefit from the knowledge of giving back (and, let’s be honest, it’s a nice portfolio booster). So, consider your message shared!
Freelancers: What’s been your experience contributing your creative talent to nonprofit or charitable organizations? Have you worked as a charitable contribution that would be deductible on your taxes, for discounted rates, or for full market rate?
And if there are any other charities or nonprofits out there with freelance jobs available, please drop me a line through the “Submit Your Question” link!
